https://indiepulsemusic.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/35055-orbison.jpg 25th Anniversary Edition of Roy Orbison’s final studio masterwork coming this spring

Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, in conjunction with Roy’s Boys LLC, the Nashville-based company formed by the sons of the late Roy Orbison, commemorate the 25th anniversary of the artist’s Mystery Girl with the release of both a CD/DVD Deluxe edition coming Tuesday, May 20, 2014 as well as a 15-track (audio only) Mystery Girl Expanded edition CD.
Mystery Girl – Deluxe brings together the albums original 10 songs, including the worldwide smash single “You Got It,” in addition to premiering nine previously unreleased studio and work-tape demos. Among those is “The Way Is Love,” featuring a newly restored Roy Orbison vocal track layered with contemporary guitar, drum and vocal accompaniment by Roy’s three sons (Roy Jr., Alex and Wesley). The package includes “Mystery Girl: Unraveled,” a new one-hour documentary chronicling the song-by-song creation of Mystery Girl through rare and intimate archival footage and the memories of those who were there.  In addition to the “Mystery Girl: Unraveled” documentary, the DVD includes eight Roy Orbison music videos, four of which are previously unreleased including a piece documenting the renewal and rebirth of “The Way Is Love.”
Mystery Girl – Expanded is an audio-only version of the original Mystery Girl album with five tracks added to the line-up including “The Way Is Love.”
Mystery Girl – Deluxe LP will also be available as a collectible 2 LP set, struck on 180 gram 12" vinyl for audiophiles, vinyl aficionados and Orbison fans, in general. The set includes the original album’s track listing on one LP and the 9 bonus tracks offered on the Mystery Girl – Deluxe CD on the second LP.  The vinyl set will be released on June 10 in time for Father’s Day.
Those who purchase the Mystery Girl – Deluxe set through the online store at RoyOrbison.com will also be sent an exclusive, limited edition 18-month calendar (July 2014 – December 2015) featuring art derived from the Mystery Girl – Deluxe package.
Executive produced by “Roy’s Boys” (Wesley Orbison, Roy Orbison, Jr. and Alex Orbison) and directed by Alex Orbison, “Mystery Girl: Unraveled” features new interviews with Billy Burnette, John Carter Cash, Mike Campbell, Steve Cropper, Richard Dodd, Jim Keltner, Jeff Lynne, David Malloy, Tom Petty and Roy’s three sons. The film also incorporates never-before-seen interviews with Bono, Barbara Orbison, Jeff Ayeroff and others, all sharing insights into Roy’s life and work.
Archival footage includes revelatory sequences lensed, literally, in Mike Campbells garage (aka “Mike’s Garage,” where much of the album was recorded) in addition to breathtaking studio sequences and live footage shot around the time of the album’s recording.
“Mystery Girl: Unraveled” concludes with new documentary footage illuminating the creation of “The Way Is Love,” one of the previously unreleased tracks on Mystery Girl – Deluxe. Roys vocals were found on a previously unheard Roy Orbison/Bill Dees work-tape, originally recorded on a boombox cassette player, and meticulously stripped out for this extraordinary new recording. Produced by John Carter Cash and engineered by Chuck Turner, the “The Way Is Love” vocal was taken to Johnny Cashs Cabin studio in Hendersonville, Tennessee in 2013, using the newly discovered Roy Orbison vocal as its core. Realizing a life-long dream to record with their father, Wesley and Roy Jr played guitars on the song with Alex handling the drums and all three sons bringing background vocals to the mix. “Cutting a track with my brothers was more incredible than I can describe,” said Alex. “I have been looking forward to this for my entire life.” Roy Jr. noted that “More or less the reason Alex and Wesley and I are musicians was to play in Dads band when we got older” and Wesley summed it up nicely, “I think we really got something special.”

Inbox update: Def Leppard, Kiss, The Offspring, Neil Young, Taking Back Sunday

Posted: 18 Mar 2014 08:36 AM PDT

Here is a short but timely roundup of today’s news…

Def Leppard and Kiss are heading out on tour together, while NIN and Soundgarden are heading out on the road too. And Orange County’s own The Offspring finally headlines the Pacific Amphitheatre at The Orange County Fair this summer. Read Ben Wener’s post on The Orange County Register site here. USA Today also has an extensive story about the forthcoming Def Leppard-Kiss outing and you can check that out here.

Speaking of Kiss, it appears that there has been no solution in the tug-of-war between the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Kiss regarding any chance of Kiss appearing at the upcoming induction ceremony next month. Read this story in Billboard for more details.

According to an interview in Spin, Neil Young is writing a science fiction book. Click here to read the interview.

R.E.M. go acoustic for the people on Record Store Day

Posted: 17 Mar 2014 07:57 AM PDT

Happy Monday everybody! I am in Southern California and slept through the Earthquake this morning. I’m rested now and ready to share the latest music news! While we wait for R.E.M. to return (unlikely), here is a nice bit of news about the band…

https://indiepulsemusic.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/ea5b4-rem.jpg
Unplugged: The Complete 1991 And 2001 Sessions Brings Together Both Of The Band’s Appearances On The MTV Series, Including Several Unaired Performances, For A Limited Edition Four-LP Collection
Available On April 19 As A Record Store Day Exclusive,
Mike Mills Will Sign Copies At Bullmoose In Scarborough, Maine On Same Day
LOS ANGELES – MARCH 17, 2014 – R.E.M. delivered two knockout performances on MTV’s Grammy® and Emmy® award-winning “Unplugged” series, the first in 1991 and the other in 2001, giving them the unique distinction of being the only band to headline the series twice. Surprisingly, audio from both shows has never been available, making these some of the most demanded music in the R.E.M. vaults. That will all change on Record Store Day 2014, when Rhino releases both performances as a limited edition, four-LP set. The collection includes every performance from the original broadcasts, as well as 11 songs that never aired, from the storied collection of the band’s MTV appearances.

UNPLUGGED: THE COMPLETE 1991 AND 2001 SESSIONS is packaged in a four-pocket gatefoldwill be available exclusively at select independent music retailers on April 19. For a list of participating stores, please visit www.recordstoreday.com.

The “Unplugged” performances are sonic snapshots that capture the legendary Athens, Georgia band at important points on its journey from alternative-music progenitors to international stars that have sold more than 85 million albums.

Drummer Bill Berry, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills and singer Michael Stipe recorded their first “Unplugged” session in 1991, while riding a growing wave of success that began in 1987 with the commercial breakthrough of Document. Much of the performance spotlights songs from R.E.M.’s then-current album Out of Time, which sold over 18 million copies worldwide and was the band’s first #1 album in the U.S. From the album, the band performed “Radio Song,” “Low” and its biggest American hit, “Losing My Religion.”

The remainder of the set list spans eight years of music and touches on five different albums, mixing “Perfect Circle” from R.E.M.’s 1983 debut Murmur and fan-favorites like “Fall On Me” and “Its The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” with a cover of The Troggs’ “Love Is All Around.” Five songs that never aired can be heard on this set for the first time, including two tracks from the multi-platinum Green – “Get Up” and “World Leader Pretend.”

R.E.M. made an extremely rare second appearance on “Unplugged” in 2001, but this time without original drummer Bill Berry, who left the band in 1997. For the show, the band focused mainly on its 12th studio album Reveal – which came out that year – with performances of the singles “Imitation of Life” and “All The Way To Reno (You’re Gonna Be A Star).” The song selection draws from eight different albums with “So. Central Rain” from 1984’s Reckoning, “Cuyahoga” from 1986’s Lifes Rich Pageant and “Find The River,” the elegiac album closer from the 1992 classic Automatic For The People.

This collection uncovers six songs from the session that were never broadcast, including tracks fromReveal and Up (1998), as well as a haunting and tranquil re-imagination of the band’s breakthrough single, “The One I Love” from 1987’s Document.

Following their debut on vinyl for Record Store Day 2014, both “Unplugged” performances will be released on CD and digitally on May 20.

Always advocates for independent record stores, on April 19th (Record Store Day), R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills will be signing copies of the limited-edition, four-LP set at Bull Moose record store inScarborough, Maine.

Since its debut in 1989, “Unplugged” has been a cultural watershed of musical moments, featuring unforgettable performances from artists including Nirvana, Jay-Z, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Tony Bennett, Mariah Carey, Katy Perry, Lil Wayne, Adele , Florence + The Machine and Miley Cyrus. Unplugged was created by Robert Small and Jim Burns and produced by Alex Coletti.

Music Worth Buying: ‘Mystery Science Theater 3000: XXIX’ collection, ‘The Dukes of September,’ Break of Reality

Posted: 16 Mar 2014 11:46 AM PDT

https://indiepulsemusic.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/6ccee-youth.jpg

Why would I include the latest Mystery Science Theater 3000 collection in a roundup of noteworthy new music titles?

Look no further than the first of four episodes on Mystery Science Theater 3000: XXIX (set for release by Shout! Factory on Tuesday, March 25), a rightful skewering of the 1957 teen exploitation flick Untamed Youth. The film not only features early rock ‘n’ roll hero Eddie Cochran (“C’Mon Everybody,” “Summertime Blues”) but has the distinction of boasting the first-ever on-screen performance of a rock song sung by a female (famed actress Mamie Van Doren). To be sure the movie itself is dated and campy, but thanks to the clever work of the writers and performers of MST3K, hilarity ensues. Among the extras on the new collection is an interview with the aforementioned Van Doren, and the original theatrical trailer for Untamed Youth. The other three films that get a well-deserved Satellite of Love treatment include Hercules And The Captive Women, The Thing That Couldn’t Die and The Pumaman. Laughter aplenty! Captured live at Lincoln Center in November 2012, the Dukes of September Rhythm Revue (featuring Donald Fagen, Michael McDonald, Boz Scaggs and a top-tier group of seven other musicians and two back-up singers) features not only some of the trio’s biggest hits but rock and R&B nuggets such as “Love T.K.O.” and “Sweet Soul Music.”  There are all kinds of highlights on the disc (which looks and sounds fantastic), notably Fagen leading the way through Steely Dan’s “Kid Charlegmagne” (which features some masterful guitar work from Jon Herrington) and an inspired “Lido Shuffle.” For more information, visit www.429records.com/dukesofseptember.

From the melancholy-blanketed rocker “Helix” to the more atmospheric “Star” and cinematic “Storm’s End” and “Nine Deep,” Laird, Trevino and cellists Laura Metcalf and Adrian Daurov, and several guest players, create a world that is at once familiar and new. Magic music making indeed. Information: www.breakofreality.com.

Tommy Castro is back.
The Northern California-based singer-guitarist has just issued “The Devil You Know,” his first full-length studio album since 2009. Featuring his forceful backing band The Painkillers, Castro’s new 13-track album showcases he remains one of the genre’s most talented proponents; he writes songs that showcase both his powerful vocals and fiery skills on the electric guitar. In addition, guests on “The Devil You Know” includes singer-guitarist Joe Bonamassa, Cajun singer-pianist Marcia Ball and Louisiana singer-guitarist Tab Benoit.

Castro has won multiple Blues Music Awards, including for his 2009 Alligator Records debut “Hard Believer,” a disc that outlined his signature mix of hard-edged blues-rock and Memphis soul. On his latest album, Castro challenged himself to add different sounds and new rhythms to his style without abandoning his distinctive blues-meets-soul style.

Castro is a powerful live performer and his show at the Coach House promises to be a celebration of the blues, as well as the art of guitar playing. What’s more, Castro has fun at his concerts.
A lot of folks are having hard times these days,” Castro says in a media release sent out in connection with his new album. “And they need something to lift them up and make them smile. Our music kills the pain.”
