Rainmaker by Jeffrey Halford & the Healers
Reviewed by Joseph Timmons
From humble beginnings, Jeffrey Halford was born in Dallas, Texas, and grew up in the early 1960s listening to Roger Miller on a $2 transistor radio. By the time he turned 18, Jeffrey had moved 10 times between LA and San Francisco, one could say he was weaned on luck and a prayer. His sound is a cross between Rockabilly and Folk with a hint of southern cooking. His latest album, Rainmaker is an audible journey through this land and it’s down home musical history, making stops for gas along Highway 61 and Route 66. There is honesty in his voice and a whole lot of hope in his music, songs of good times and bad, and songs of traveling and of wanting a home to cling to.
Rainmaker has no limits as it tells a story of the artist, rather than the other way around, it is his baby, born and raised in love and he shares it with us, the use of Steel Guitar and organs in the song “Vinyl” is a hot wax festival, deep and sultry rhythms to make you want to dance, while the song “Second Chance” is a desperate plea for forgiveness from a spirit that is just this side of broken.
But this is not a mash up of songs with no connection to each other, like I said; it is a story, a journey….. His journey, and we get to feel it all, right alongside him.
Not to leave out his fellows in travel, his band mates, The Healers, Paul Olguin on Bass, Guitars and Stand Up Bass, Adam Rossi on Piano and Organ and the master of the beat Michael Messer complete the core group and sound like they were meant to be together, a natural chemistry that makes the music matter. With a holy host of guest musicians and production work by some of the best in the business, Jeffrey Halford & the Healers album “Rainmaker” could not be anything but a religious experience of soul searching music.
My favorite song is “City of Hope”, a place where we all want to live, where every dream could come true, if given the chance. Rainmaker is a bard’s tale, of this great land and the people in it, we are brothers in arms, singing our songs, and dancing in the rain, come to the revival and let yourself feel good again.
