#NowPlaying : The Planets, Gustav Holst, conducted by Leonard Bernstein, New York Philharmonic (1981)
Throughout the past year, from thrift store to thrift store, I’ve started collecting this series of records, Great Performances. It started with a Beethoven’s Fifth I believe and steadily grew.
The older I get, the more I appreciate these classical pieces. And thrift stores are full of them. It’s a great inexpensive way to discover these classics.
Tonight, I picked up this record, The Planets, a piece written about 100 years ago. The whole piece is broken up into 7 movements. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but to my surprise and delight, the record is simply brilliant. It’s like a soundtrack to a sci-fi film, but was composed well before science fiction films were even a thing. Surely this must have inspired a slew of modern day composers.
If you ever get a chance to listen to The Planets, I highly recommend it.
