Canadian avant-pop legend Spookey Ruben
personally may or may not fully realize the cultural significance of his debut LP, 1995’s Modes Of Transportation, Vol. 1
. But if you go ahead and ask artists ranging from Chris Walla
(Death Cab For Cutie), Graham Walsh
(Holy Fuck) to fellow-Canadian songstress/Kanye collaborator, Esthero
(a fan since her childhood), or even listen deeply to contemporary artists like Ariel Pink
, Dirty Beaches
and Toro Y Moi
his influence is undeniable on the music world.
The fact that it’s been twenty years since this record was released on the ill-fated TVT label (Nine Inch Nails, Brian Jonestown Massacre) is mind-blowing since Ruben’s debut could have been released in 2015 or 1985 for that matter. This re-issue serves as a landmark holiday which includes the full remastered album, plus a slew of bonus tracks, remixes and unreleased material dating from 1995 and 1996 will see the light of day on December 15th, 2015. This classic album is a morning bell and shining foreshadow to a brand new LP by Spookey slated for Spring 2016 which is rumored to feature collaborations with Esthero, Geneva Jacuzzi and more to be announced.
