Album Review:Bryan Deister – Spines of the Heart

Described as “A sprawling and ambitious release from classically trained musician Bryan Deister entitled “Spines of the Heart”. Dark and emotionally penetrating, his work is as influenced by classical and jazz music as by Kurt Cobain. Appreciators of experimental rock/electronic fusions such as Radiohead’s “King of Limbs” should enjoy. “Spines of the Heart” is an album of brooding reflection.”

After listening to the album, I would have to agree, although it is “polished” and masterfully produced, Spines of the Heart has a full and emotionally driven sound that pulls at you, and makes your mind vibrate with heavy imagery. With a direction that reminds you of early progressive artists such as King Crimson, ELP and Camel. Ambient and filled with metamorphose tonality in consciousness. Spines of the Heart, an album that took 3 years to write, exposes a very personal side of its creator, a view into the human heart that has seen both sides of the moon and may have flown too close to the sun, touching lames with just the tips of his wings so as not to forget the pain of living in a world where to dream is an escape from bitter realities and longing for an adventure.

Yeah, Spines of the Heart is a triumph in subtle overdrive, and is in fact, just that good, listen for yourself, we have included the Soundcloud link below.

Seeking always to be a musician without limits or constraints, Bryan believes in no covers necessary. Trained in classical, jazz, blues, progressive rock, and modern music, Bryan writes, sings, and composes all of his music including the chorales, polyrhythms and unique instrumentation such as funk banjo and rice percussion.

Along with Nirvana, Weezer, Voltaire, My Bloody Valentine, Bryan decided that dark, thoughtful, well written music is what he really wanted to be a part of. This led to him take writing music seriously and venturing off (from classical and jazz) into all of the 20th century style composition techniques from John Cage to John Lennon.

Bryan is working hard at Berkley College of Music, keeping up his Writing and Composition Scholarship.

Bryan says “Hopefully after Berkley I will continue to improve in all facets and be able to write interesting music without starving.”

Several songs from Spines of the Heart are currently performing well on the digital radio charts, and the album won “Best Alternative Rock Album” at the 2016 Akademia Awards (www.theakademia.com/march2016_bestalbum_alternativerock2.html).
