Barren Womb’s ‘Old Money/ New Lows’; Music Video for “Crook Look”

Norwegian noise rock duo Barren Womb have released their new album “Old Money / New Lows,” via Spartan Records.

Nearly three years since their last full-length release, the Nordic heavy noise rockers in Barren Womb return with “Old Money / New Lows,” a jarring, mid-tempo dirge in 8 movements that sees the band further evolving into an animal all of its own.

From the sparse drumming and venomous narrative of album-opener “Crook Look,” all the way through to the haunting, epic finale of “Russian Handkerchief,” Old Money / New Lows repeatedly hits like a ton of bricks. And while there’s heaviness by the truckload here, there’s also catchiness behind the nastiness. Accompanying the wall of abrasive guitars, screamed vocals, and pummeling drums is newfound pop sensibility and a tackle box full of hooks in the tradition of the finest AmRep and Dischord bands from years long past.

What others are saying about ‘Old Money / New Lows’:

“Timo Silvola & Tony Gonzalez specializes in heavy rock that fits snuggly into the tradition of their self-designated influences, namely Amphetamine Reptile and Dischord. The hooks amongst the heaviness are most palpable in closer “Russian Handkerchief,” and there’s a recurring political bent. The vocals sometimes remind me of Rollins circa Life Time.”- The Vinyl District

“…the band is somehow the raucous offspring of Refused and KEN Mode. or a less a garage-y version of Kvelertak without all the retro-harmonies and dual guitar leads. …this Nordic duo can write a track that’s equally catchy and angry. One minute “Mystery Meat” is tossing about blasts and noisy, jangly chords, and the next they’ve settled into a groove and a catchy chorus. It’s a trip, but it’s also extremely well done and worth it.”- Metal Injection

“…powered by a Headbanger’s Ball-ready riff and some desperate screams, and it’s a true ripper. If you haven’t checked out Barren Womb yet but you’re into Refused or newer bands like Turnstile and METZ, you should give this a spin.”- Brooklynvegan

Ever wonder what it would sound like if classic Jesus Lizard and Shellac tracks got tossed into the metalli-meat grinder with some latter day Refused? Okay, we didn’t either, but Barren Womb gave it to us anyway and the Norway duo’s dissonant clang clang n’ shout is pretty goddamn catchy even as its twists and turns lure you toward pulverizing crescendos- Decibel
