Free Performance at BLUE DIAMOND on Saturday, March 24th – 9:00 pm
The Blues Tools are Grimm; Fenix Sanders (vocals/saxophone; also fronts The Fenix Project, who have a longtime Wednesday night residency at the Blue Diamond); Kelly Clifton (bass/vocals); and Charlie Swift (drums).
“There’s a lot of awesome talent in Portland that we know of. But there are also performers that aren’t as well known that should be recognized and I think Kathryn Grimm is one of those,” says Sonny Hess, Co-Owner of the Blue Diamond, in the latest issue of Blues-E-News. “She sings, she plays guitar, she plays bass and she can rip off a lead solo arpeggio that is so tasteful and melodic and fits exactly with what the music is saying. She can front a band and take over an audience and a stage and have them eating out of her palm of her hand, if that is what she was hired to do. But she can also fit into a musical situation and be a side woman, or sideman, and fill that particular band’s need. To me that’s the consummate performer, who rises above the ego and pettiness to be there for the song. She’s also got a great ear for singing and harmony, is a great songwriter and is probably one of Portland’s top performers,” concludes Hess.
In the same Blues-E-News article, Grimm gives props to the Blues scene in her adopted hometown: “Portland’s love for the blues is like no other city I’ve experienced, except Memphis. Several radio stations here play blues music and support local blues artists. The Waterfront Blues Festival is the best I’ve seen. And there’s a great support and camaraderie here among the musicians.”
Kathryn Grimm: Some Background
Kathryn Grimm is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist based in Portland, Oregon who has had a colorful journey, to say the least. Living for some time in Hollywood, this petite musical dynamo has written, recorded and/or performed with some of the best in the biz. Friend and fellow guitarist, the late Jeff Buckley, backed her up in her original band, Group Therapy. Grimm and Bo Diddley jammed between takes while filming Rockula (“One of my career highlights is playing his guitar”). She’s the featured guitarist in Michael Bolton’s video, ‘Dance With Me’. Kathryn’s self-produced CD Grimm Again was an honorable mention on the Official Grammy Ballot (Best New Electric Blues Artist). Her CD Transition Girl features ‘Money Talks’, one of many songs she recorded with tthe aforementioned Buckley. Her latest album, God Is Testing Me is getting solid reviews in print publications and steady radio airplay.
Locally, Kathryn has her hands in several projects – writing, singing and playing guitar in her two bands, Hippie Love Slave (a fun mix of blues/rock/jazz and psychedelia) (and) Kathryn Grimm and the Blues Tools (sultry electric blues). She also a vocalist/guitarist/bassist in Portland trio The Jazz Rockets; The Strum Broads is her duet with Portland Blues legend, Sonny Hess. Grimm is a regular guest at Sonny Hess’ NW Women In Blues events and the house guitarist for The Rocker Chixx Choir. Grimm wrote several songs for the award-winning play “Homeless, The Musical” by Portland playwright Alan Alexander. Kathryn is a graduate of the Musician’s Institute Guitar Program and has two degrees from California State University, Los Angeles (BA, Jazz Studies; MA, Commercial Music), where she graduated with top honors and was the recipient of several scholarships. She’s excited about her new band Kathryn Grimm and the Blues Tools making a big splash on the local Blues Scene.
