IndieShout Out: Powderpaint
Powderpaint are a synthpop duo combining the songwriting and production abilities of James Cronin and Shonalika Tilak.
This Duo has an 80’s pop sound but I would think they have a sense of self and a sense of humor, the video featured in this shout out is interesting, the clock moves, seemingly backwards, around the hands, so time stands still in the moment, but all else continues to move around, but against the natural order. the artists stand perfectly still, motionless, seemingly doing nothing, until the perfect “Selfie” Moment, a tap to ones moment of vanity? possibly so, or just immortalizing the moment as a pleasant memory.
Since he was a teenager, James has been knee-deep in synthesisers. Busy listening to A-Ha and playing augmented triads while his peers were getting into metal, he went viral on YouTube as a teenager with the popular “3 Guys, 6 Synths,” medley of 80s classics (which he now hates). His self-titled EP combined his pop sound with a melancholic mood. Shonalika, on the other hand, performed as a metal-influenced acoustic singer-songwriter, but also enjoyed dark wave and 80s synthpop. Once a spinal condition left them unable to play guitar, they shifted entirely to writing electronic music.
The duo’s combined influences result in a sound a sound that is melodic, energetic and sometimes dark, with a broad range of lyrical content covering everything from abusive relationships to queer discourse to obscure cults. Powderpaint are likely to appeal to fans of 80s synthpop and dark wave such as the Pet Shop Boys and Depeche Mode, as well as newer electronic acts including Chvrches and Hot Chip.
