Places Erupt with release of first single and companion Video, “Bloggers,” band takes stand against online trolling.
This video, “Bloggers” by Places Erupt (made possible thanks to a FACTOR grant they received last year) depicts a character who shies away from expressing his extreme political beliefs face to face with people, just to go home and rant at nauseam online – unhinged and uninhibited. It was filmed by Pedja Milosavljevic of Balkanada, an independent production house.
This video is very poignant at this moment with the present issues with online bullying, hate speech and “Internet Highway Road Rage”, and unfortunately, with the growth of that anger taking to the schools with guns, and the fractures that violence and anger causes.
Visualize orchestral music, rock, shoegaze and post-punk swirling about in a tornado and Places Erupt is at its centre, flanked by defiant, dancing black swans. Places Erupt – a tempestuous sextet who revel in their contrasts.
The forthcoming 45 EP both lashes out and laughs at the terrifying times in which we are currently living in. Its lyrical content covers everything from Tinder to tourists to trolling, returning time and again to the villain at the center of our current collective nightmare – the 45th president of the United States of America. however, the issues are no laughing manner, I feel the band takes a humorous stand at a serious problem, hoping to cut the tensions with lighthearted love and laughter.

The political beliefs that the character espouses and those of the people he encounters in public are purposefully vague. The buttons that co-workers and passersby wear are yellow and blue, while the main character has a poster at home that’s purple and orange (the exact opposites of yellow and blue). The colours symbolize a polarity of political opinions that exist between him and everyone else. The band didn’t want the buttons to represent a particular issue – rather, they wanted the focus to be on the phenomenon of trolling, where people shirk away from expressing their political opinions unless they’re under the safe shield of cyber anonymity. It’s become a terrifying and unhealthy side effect of the internet, poisoning discourse and breeding hate.
