The May Project Release Debut Album “ELPIS”
“ELPIS”, the debut album by The May Project has been released and is available on all major platforms such as Bandcamp, Soundcloud, Spotify, iTunes, etc.
The May Project are based in Auckland, New Zealand have created in “ELPIS” a celestial, soundscape-exploring 15-track alt / electronic-dream-pop concept album. “ELPIS” follows on from previous single releases including ‘Infinity’, ‘Clockwork’ and ‘Bird’s Eye View’, profiled on the likes of New Zealand’s UnderTheRadar and playlisted on student stations New Zealand-wide.
The album was produced by new-on-the-scene producer Vanguard One, aka Benjamin Bartlett, who plays on several of the tracks. He is a left-field electronica artist working out of Auckland’s Parachute Studios where much of the album was recorded, and his strong vision and distinctive, collaborative production style sharpened the collection of songs into the cohesive, intriguing journey that both Katie and Benjamin had initially envisioned.
“ELPIS” is a soundtrack-like result of three years of songwriting around the concept of the myth of Pandora’s Box.
The May Project is the musical production of Auckland-based multimedia artist Katie Brown, and offers an eclectic and celestial soundscape. Katie Brown states influences of the project is much like the work of Cocteau Twins, The Cure, Massive Attack, Portishead, This Mortal Coil, Kate Bush, School of Seven Bells, The Kills, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark and New Order, but we feel it is so much more diverse than its predecessors mentioned, touching upon emotional heights unimagined. Ethereal, layered vocals (inspired by Katie’s background in choral and classical music) floating on a bed of layered, percussive synths, guitars and beats form the backbone of The May Project’s sound.
To date, The May Project has been steadily releasing tracks either in conjunction with collections by Etta Every (Katie’s fashion label), or as part of projects by The Every Conservatoire (a collective formed by Katie for conceptual, story-driven creative explorations). The album is accompanied by the Elpis novelette and capsule clothing collection by Etta Every – view the whole project as an experience on The Every Conservatoire here.
The releases have been regularly playlisted on various student stations across New Zealand, such as Auckland’s 95bFM and Christchurch’s RDU98.5fm.
