An artist compared to legendary performers such as David Bowie, Muse, Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails, DAMYN took an unconventional path to Indie Pop music. In 2009 he went on a vision quest to Madagascar, into the jagged limestone structure known as the Tsingy de Bemaraha. From this experience, he received clarity about the deep importance and power of music and his specific purpose with it.
Fulfilling this purpose would require an in depth education. That pursuit earned him a Masters of Music in Composition. DAMYN chose to apply the tools thus gained to making music in the world of Indie/Pop. Having honed his craft and his message over this long period of development, DAMYN is set to finish his debut album, The Dark Corners, in the Fall of 2018.
Discussing one of his latest releases “Could Be” we have DAYMN give us an insight into it’s creation.
“Lyrically, ‘Could Be’ explores themes of relativism, existential crisis, aimlessness, and psychological determinism. Like the other singles that have been released, ‘Other Side of the Glass’ and ‘On a Dance Floor’, it occupies the darker first half of the album. All of the songs clustered there share a similar state of consciousness. As the album progresses, some of that weight is lifted and some light emerges.
Musically, the song is one of the more complex on the album, featuring changing meters and chromatic harmonies. The rhythm follows an unbroken pattern of two bars of four and one bar of three. Fitting all of the melodies and chord progressions around this pattern was a wonderful restriction to work with. It produced some twists and turns I otherwise wouldn’t have thought of.
The Dark Corners is an album that follows an emotional and psychological progression. Every song needed to fit the right place in the narrative. This had to work on a lyrical level and a musical level, while also making the whole thing move along dynamically in just the right way. ‘Could Be’ was one of the last songs written and one of the only ones that was written. specifically to fill in a certain spot on the album. That spot needed just the right dynamic, musical quality, and lyrical themes in order to balance out the surrounding songs while fitting in with them. This made-to-order approach turned out really well and it ended up being one of my favorites on the album”
“Could Be” is a rich and deep well of inner emotion, a song that we could only expect from an artist truly in tune with their own soul.
