Album Review: Fitzsimon And Brogan “Big Blue World”
Neil Fitzsimon, the songwriter, and Bee Brogan, the vocalist, aim to produce “Pure Pop For Now People.” Preferring to remain faceless in an industry that holds image in high regard, Fitzsimon and Brogan have gone on to form a songwriting/production partnership that led to placement of their songs in Film and TV. They also wrote a musical, Jack Dagger, which was showcased at the Greenwich Theatre, London for the Musical Futures Award. It was also showcased at the Bridewell and the Royal College of Music in London. They have also just had a song placed in a USA Sci–Fi Feature film. The duo recently had a track reach number 3 on a French national download chart. Their track, “This Is Love” earned the duo Semi-Finalist status in the Eurovision Contest. Currently, the title track from their latest release, “Big Blue World” is the #3 video on Beat100.com.
Both musicians had collaborated earlier on in their career, most notably as members of “Pretty Blue Gun”, their former band. After releasing two well-received albums with the group, Fitzsimon and Brogan decided to focus on their solo project instead, allowing free range to their creativity. Their music could be compared to the work of artists as diverse as Elvis Costello, Jimmy Webb, The Beatles, David Bowie, and many more, echoing the best rock and roll and pop traditions.
Just by looking at the cover of “Big Blue World,” I expected something completely different from the guitars, and from the female voice that greeted me on the latest album from Fitzsimon and Brogan. I’m absolutely in love with Bee Brogan’s voice: half Pat Benatar, half Michelle Shocked. The ending of the title track goes completely over-the-top, when Brogan showcases what her voice is capable of doing. Of course, I listened to “Blue Velvet,” expecting the Bobby Vinton cover, and I fell immediately in love with the sound of the guitars and the charmed atmosphere of the song. “Girl in a Gilded Cage” makes me feel like I’m listening to something that could have been a #1 hit by the Go-Go’s! They say you can’t go back in time..They say you can’t repeat the past…With Fitzsimon and Brogan, you certainly can. Pop on their latest release, and you certainly will. My pick for this year’s best throwback revival album!
