EP Review: JJ McGuigan “Dissociative”
JJ McGuigan caught the attention of radio programmers and music journalists with the first two singles from his EP, Dissociative. “Letter” and “Home” received both critical praise and airplay chart success, reaching the New Music Weekly country chart Top 80, as well as the Top 40 Roots Music Report Americana chart. “Letter” earned McGuigan an Akademia Award for Best Alternative Song in January 2017.
Perhaps the most somber of all recent artists that I’ve heard. At first, when I started listening to “In All Honesty,” I didn’t quite know what to make of it. It was indeed darker than most artists, and it had this alternative music/grunge feeling, as if I was listening to an acoustic Candlebox song. The music was wonderful, but that guitar fill just made me long for a desperate plea about being set free, and perhaps a shout or two. On “Letter,” the musicianship is impeccable, and I could hear the feeling in the voice…just pure sadness. JJ McGuigan is a great musician and tremendous songwriter, with grungy feeling. His lyrics are indeed inspiring. – Lady Stardust
