IndiePulse Interviews: J.E.F.F.
Electronic rocker J.E.F.F. released his first single ‘Sleepless’ on July 7th 2018 as part of his debut album ‘Until the morning light’ expected for the end of the year.
Being a busy touring and session guitar player in Los Angeles, the French musician started his solo project as a way to release all his unachieved musical ideas. The result is a blend of rock n’ roll, guitar playing and electronic music elements, somewhere between US hard rock and European EDM.
IPM: What inspired you to write music like you do?
I just want to write fun and entertaining songs that I would be happy to listen to on the radio or live. I like high energy rock n’ roll and electronic music. But the genre doesn’t really matter, at the end of the day it’s all about recording a cool track. I attack music writing through storytelling and what will best achieve the translation of my emotions/mood.
IPM: Tell us about your performance style.
So far it’s a one man band, I write, record and produce everything. The best part of it is that my music sounds exactly like I want it to sound. But it’s only the beginning of the whole thing, there will be other musicians involve in the future. Both on the recordings and onstage. My great friend Julio Mendoza is helping me with the visual aspect of project as well, we often work together on new ideas.
IPM: What are some of the challenges for you in producing or performing while keeping true to your vision of your music?
It’s sometimes hard to stick to the same direction while producing an album. I like to go out, play in bands, go see live shows, partying with other musicians, listening to new music everyday…. Every life experience you go through can have an impact on your music and the way you write. The life in Los Angeles as a young musician is pretty intense, it’s sometimes difficult not to get overwhelmed by all that. Another challenge is to stick to deadlines when you’re releasing a track. Especially when you’re dealing with this kind of electronic-rock music. You’re constantly changing details, it could be an automation on a synth line, a guitar solo or the pitch of a voice sample…. At some point you need to stop experimenting and finish your track for good.
IPM: Tell us about some of your performance plans or goals.
I haven’t played this project on stage yet. I’m working on putting a band together to make some kick ass shows. The music is very energetic and high tempo in general so it will be a lot of fun to perform with other musicians.
IPM: Any albums coming out soon or shows you are looking to promote?
I just released my first single and music video. Now I’m working on my debut full album. I’m in the middle of the writing process and I’m looking to add some other musicians on the tracks. Once everything is recorded I will focus on touring.
IPM: Any ‘strange tales’ or things that may have happened during a show that seemed too weird to be true?
I used to tour with a punk rock band in my hometown of Paris, France. There was always this crazy/drunk dude going up on stage trying to fight with the band and steal the hi hat of the drummer. He was there at almost every gig. It was part of the show at some point.
IPM: Where do you see your music going, where would you like to be on the near future, goals, dreams and passions?
Let see what happens. I don’t have any particular expectations with this project. I just want to release new music on a consistent basis and put a live band together to play my album. I like making music videos so every time I will release a track, there will be some visuals coming with it. I keep myself busy with many other bands as a guitar player but every time I have a few hours to kill I put my soul and my energy into this project.
IPM: What would you like our readers to know about you
I just want the people to listen to my stuff. I don’t really care what they think. If they like it, that’s cool. I just try to make my music as honest and sincere as possible.
