Originating in Hunter Valley, Australia, singer-songwriter Matt “Magpie” Johnston unassumingly founded Magpie Diaries as a coping mechanism for the loss of a dear friend, channeling his grief into the band’s signature brand of smooth alternative country music, bolstered by a tinge of folk and psychedelic rock straight out of the 70s.

Motivated to continue this musical journey, Johnston set to work on the songs, recording Sanctuary with producer Matt Sherrod (Crowded House, Beck, William Crighton), over the next 3 years.

Ranging from the upbeat style of previously released single ‘When Love Comes’ to the contemplative melancholy of closing track ‘Don’t Give Up’, Sanctuary’s 11 laid back tracks are unique and easy on the ears, drawing comparisons to the work of Grateful DeadVan Morrison and Neil Young.

Alongside his own musical endeavors, Magpie hosts a festival in his family property once a year. The festival titled The Gum Ball started over 10 years ago and today brings in crowds from around the world.

The music of Magpie Diaries is upbeat, grooving, steeped in tradition and “neuvo blues”,  yet has a haunting tone that delights the senses. this album sets the tone for the new folk scene and will be top of form upon it’s release. the talents of Magpie Johnston and his crew is undeniable and will touch you on a spiritual level. If its a modern sweet valley hodown you are a hankerin for, Magpie Diaries is sure to please, bring a blanket, your love on your arm and share the dream.

Originally Magpie Diaries was a performance concept where Magpie set out to compile and perform all his random writings among various books and scrap paper, from time spent travelling, under the influence or in solitary confinement in the back shack at Belford as a teenager. The songs are old soul, unique and somewhat timeless, some are new, some are about 18 years old. One thing is for sure though, a catalog of music has begun that will appeal to anyone who enjoys laid back music from the heart.

Magpie Diaries will support the release of Sanctuary on November 16th with 4 shows at the prestigious Woodford Folk Festival over New Years, along with an Australian East Coast tour to throughout January – March. More information can be found on their socials.
