American High: “U.N. Article 14” Review By Addison Coleman

“Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution.” Article 14 is included in the “Universal Declaration of Human Right”…… so what’s with this Mexican wall? That’s exactly what Doug Terry brainchild of American High strives to discover.

One of the strongest and well hid political releases is a credit to the celebrated sounds of American High. Their messages are elegantly and immaculately disguised behind the unique harmonies and “happy” rhythms of Doug Terry’s lyrical genius. At first glance American High’s carefree and bouncy sound draws the listener in completely. Then just as you become addicted to the sound of the music, the lyrics start to become apparent without warning. Now you’re enjoying the music as well as learning facts about the injustices of our political climate and the iniquity of our law-enforcement agencies.

The intensity of a subject matter of the songs are intentionally hidden behind the jovial pop beat of the music, for example “Cheye Calvo”, the controversial drug raid of the former Mayor of Berwyn Heights, Maryland. The raid was a culmination of an investigation regarding 15 kg of marijuana that was intercepted in a warehouse and addressed to the mayor’s residence. When the package was delivered to the mayor’s house, a SWAT team showed up and held the mayor and his family at gunpoint. They also shot and killed his two dogs. Of course, Calvo was cleared of all charges, however the police refused to even utter an apology.

The track U.N. Article 14 tells the story of a family or group of friends trying to escape the wall of Mexico. It’s a scary and desperate attempt into the flight for freedom. It’s a powerful look at the disregard of human beings and discrimination.

U.N. Article 14 is a radical journey into the human attempt to live as humans. It is musically refreshing and absolutely addicting. It’s anti-war, anti-discrimination, anti-hate, yet enjoyable. Definitely one of the best albums produced this year, and although the year is young it’s going to be tough to beat it!
