Buenos Diaz releases Nervous (single)

Don’t be nervous. This is a song that will get you going and get you jumping in an almost feverish way. “Nervous” the twitchy, tantalizing tune from Texan Buenos Diaz hits all the right feels. With 60s psychedelic vibes entrenched in a love fest with rock ‘n’ roll, Buenos Diaz’ raw vocals and unpolished percussions collude with delicious keys. “Nervous” is a gamechanger.

Buenos Diaz, headed by Houston-born Nick Diaz, leaves no space for respite in “Nervous.” The song’s music bed is full of electric buzz – the guitar work really grabs the listener. Lyrically, Diaz’ first-person strut is relatable and actually quite an enjoyment. Much of his delivery and the garage-band explosion reminds of The Strokes, White Stripes and even Fitz and the Tantrums. Less poppy, than Fitz, but Diaz shakes the listener’s world with a bit of gooey nostalgia. But, like Texas, there’s some spice to the sauce and Buenos Diaz cultivates a song that figures into more of a bluesy-guitar than a polished pop guitar riff.

Diaz’s background, according to his bio, has led him to various parts of the United States – soaking up the flavors in New Orleans, relishing in the sights and sounds of San Fransisco and even being a part of the production team of a Rock ‘n Roll Fantasy Camp. The self-taught guitarist and songwriter’s experiences bleed through in “Nervous”. I think the song really reflects all of these tones and bursts of creativity. The guitar work really surprised me mid song – I was thinking it would be heavily keys/organ, but Diaz’s riffs seemed to erupt and take the song into a higher level. The arrangement and ferocity for which he delivers made the song for me. It was as though it was a fun, quirky pop tune, and he took it to a deeper, darker, bluesier offering.

Rounding out Buenos Diaz is Mike St. Clair, Mark Henne, Mark Riddell, Brandon Taylor and Jeff Olson. The chemistry and room for improvisation is splendid in “Nervous”.

Lyrically, this song has a catchy chorus – you guessed it, he uses “Nervous” as the chorus. At times I felt more focused on the music bed than his actual singing, and the guitar and the keyboards (and the drums!) took the spotlight. It’s not that I was distracted by his voice or his voice isn’t up to par, I just felt more focused on the instruments. The song had an unpredictable feeling and moved in a way that felt like a party right out-of-the-gate. Much like The White Stripes, his voice is quick and a bit high. Again, the guitar work elevates “Nervous”. If you’re looking for a deep, meaning, prose-worthy lyrical content, you might not feel fulfilled. However, if you like great rockin’ songs from indie artists, “Nervous” is a killer track.

Buenos Diaz is an exciting band with a standout sound. “Nervous” is a great way to be introduced to this band, and like me, you might find yourself falling down the rabbit hole reaching for any song that they’ve released. Buenos Diaz lights a spark somewhere between a modern punk band with blues cravings.
