Artist Spotlight: Days To Come

IPM: Tell Us About Yourself.

Well, My name is Justin Goodson and I’m the vocalist for the Georgia based hard rock band Days To Come. Brandon Rix is our guitarist and Jalen Hall is our drummer. We try to blend pop-styles vocal melodies over heavier, intricate music.

IPM: What inspired you to write music like you do?

I love melodies and stories. I started writing my first song when I was around 9 years old. I didn’t think it was very good, so I threw it in the trash. I didn’t start writing again until I was around 19. Pretty crazy how life works out.

I grew up in a military household and had the opportunity to move and experience a lot of cultures as a kid and teenager. I’m sure these experiences helped shape and influence my songwriting.

The lyrics are typically about the struggle of choice and doing the right thing in any given situation. Lyrically, I seem to continue to run back to that theme. I enjoy not necessarily having a definitive resolution in the story of the lyrics. I feel like this gives the listener the freedom to come up with his or her own conclusion and it’ll make the song more personal for them.

IPM: Tell us about the other members of the band, and of your chemistry.

Justin – Brandon and Jalen are great guys. They’re very talented and easy to get along with. I’m very happy to be in a band with each of them!

Brandon and I have been writing and playing together since 2013. I feel like we work well at finding the best from each other. We focus on our strengths and try to push each other past where we thought we could go.

Jalen joined us in early 2018. He’s a solid player and we’re so thankful to have him with us. It’s tough finding the “right” pieces for a band. There are so many factors in finding a member other than being talented (which he is). Being in an indie band takes a mountain of work, drive, passion, and ambition. Jalen is 100% the “right” piece for Days.

IPM: What are or were some of the challenges for you in producing or performing while keeping true to your vision of your music?

Justin – Originally, we didn’t like the idea of using tracks during our live set, but, over the years, we’ve become more open to the idea. For an indie band, it’s unrealistic to take a bunch of musicians on the road with you to perform the material exactly as it’s heard on the record. It would be incredibly expensive to recreate everything “live”. Obviously, in a perfect world it would be ideal, but, it’s just not practical.

Also, by ignoring the creative aspects that technology brings to the table, I believe you’re limiting yourself on what you’re capable of creating. It’s 2019. We’ve got the technology so don’t be afraid to use it.

With that, I really don’t like it when a band is almost completely tracks based. There’s nothing “live” about their show. There’s gotta be a balance. Tracks should be used to enhance a show, not be the foundation the show is built on.

IPM: Tell us about some of your recent shows / performances.

Performing is the best. Over the years, we’ve had many opportunities to play great shows with great crowds. Hearing the crowd sing your songs back to you is such a reward. Knowing that a song had such an impact on someone is huge. I’ll never take that for granted.

IPM: Any albums coming out soon or shows you are looking to promote?

We’re excited to release our single, Siren, which is the subject of this article, as well as the music video just released. We recently partnered with management company Crown Artist Development & indie label From The Depths Entertainment & we’re so excited for 2019. This year is gonna be a big year for us & we can’t wait to share it with you!

We’re currently in the studio working on our next single, Wolves. We’re expecting it to be released in March/April.

We’re playing a mini tour in Florida in February with our friends in 7 Stone Riot and House Of Curses. It’s gonna be a great time hanging with them and seeing our fans on the road.

IPM: Any “strange tales” or things that may have happened during a show that seemed too weird to be true?

A few years ago, we had the opportunity to support Art Of Anarchy at their Atlanta show at the Masquerade during their tour. At the time, AOA had Scott Stapp singing for them. I was pretty excited about the opportunity to meet Scott because of his work with Creed. Before the show, Brandon and I were walking backstage and we were able to meet Scott. I went to shake his hand but we couldn’t seem to decide on how we were gonna do it. It ended up being an awkward fist bump, high five, handshake. It was awkward, Brandon said hey, and we all parted ways.

IPM: Where do you see your music going, where would you like to be in the near future, goals, dreams and passions?

A: Justin – Originally, my goal was just to be able to play music. I love the release writing provides and the energy of playing a show. After being in a band for almost five years, the ultimate goal hasn’t changed – I just have a lot of other goals now too!

This year, I would like to reach more people than ever before. I would like to really tap into what “Days To Come” is and what it means to the listener. I want to continue to build our team and family and make a positive change in the world.

IPM: What would you like our readers to know about you?

I’m thankful for the gift of music. I love being able to create, perform and meet so many wonderful people on the road and online. I would like Days To Come to make a positive impact on the world. I want our music to positively change someone’s life. Music is powerful and I believe we can do it.
