LAUNCHES 11TH CITY PLAYLIST – PORTLAND

Home Unknown (homeunknown.co), an online music player of 10-15 song playlists of independent local bands and artists for different cities across the US, launched its 11th playlist – Portland, Oregon.

It joins other city playlists: Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco, Nashville, Louisville, and Kansas City.

As opposed to most online streaming models, Home Unknown does not accept submissions, and approaches each band individually to be included on their playlist based on the quality of their music and their activity in their local music scenes – such as playing shows, etc.

“It was important to us to get Portland on the website,” says founder Ricardo D. “Not only are they known as an incredible music city, but they’re fiercely independent.”

Along with the city playlists that Home Unknown arranges themselves, are curated playlists created by fans involved in their city’s music scene. There are currently curators in NYC (punk and indie), Miami (punk and indie), Los Angeles (punk), and Philadelphia (indie), with playlists shortly launching in San Diego, New Jersey, and Nashville.

All together Home Unknown has featured over 170 bands on their website.

Home Unknown launched last September, born from Ricardo’s own frustrations with the nearly endless amount of musical options that are found on other music streaming services, which doesn’t benefit band or fans.

“Our focus is on bands and keeping a high standard for the playlists. The submission model may benefit the platform, but it’s about time the artists were made the priority; which can only be done by making sure that each step of curating playlists is done by people motivated by passion, not pageviews.”
