Tidal Gloom

Their self-titled EP, Tidal Gloom, is the first project written and produced by Matt Popowski, former bassist of Post-Hardcore band Gatherers (Equal Vision).

Shortly after his departure, Matt began writing feverishly. Characterizing his new body of work as “a culmination of everything I’ve been doing as a musician for the last 10 years with the freedom to express it through all the instrumentation.”

A guitarist first and foremost, Matt identifies his approach to Tidal Gloom conceptually as a combination of his love for bands like Interpol and Radiohead. Having been part of the post-hardcore scene for several years, his growing excitement for artists such as Drab Majesty, The Black Queen and Soft Kill provide the catalyst for the mood Tidal Gloom ultimately imbues. Their three songs on this debut Throes, Holy Prowler, and Paradise in Sin are dark, intimate and poetic. A collage and reimagining of the aforementioned bands, but with a distinct wit and emotional connection to the music.

Matt sought the help of longtime friend, vocalist and guitarist, Rich Gladis, to lead vocals for the project. For Rich, “After hearing what Matt had come up with I felt a real opportunity to write some of the most haunting, personal lyrics of my life. There was an urgency for me and I needed to be a part of it.”

The two have plans to record several new songs in the coming year.

For Matt, Tidal Gloom is not only an extension of himself but his auditory perceptions. “I’ve always treated songwriting like film making in that I always compare song structure to flow and pacing of films and put a huge emphasis on color and emotion output when I’m writing. I want people to feel the same when they’re listening to Tidal Gloom, as they are watching Von Trier or Kubrick.”
