NEW ALL-WOMXN BAND RELEASES EMPOWERING FEMINIST ANTHEM, “HUNT”
Rising all-womxn R&B/funk band, Sarah & the Shirzans, released their groundbreaking debut single, “Hunt” this week on all platforms. The daring and provocative funk tune was independently written, produced, mixed, and mastered by band members Sarah Khatami (lead vocals/songwriter), Michela McDonagh (background vocals/songwriter), Sophie Potrykus (bass/songwriter), Regina Averion (drums/producer), and Nina Cavalheiro (guitar/mixing and mastering engineer).
The first single off of Sarah & the Shirzans’ upcoming EP of the same name, “Hunt” is based on a poem written by the band’s background vocalist, Michela McDonagh. “She brought the poem in for one of our writing sessions back in March, and at the bottom of the page she had written ‘HUNT’ in big, red pen and I knew immediately that it had to be the title of our single and EP,” said the band’s founder and lead singer, Sarah Khatami. In McDonagh’s own words, her poem, inspired by Salem’s notorious witch trials, “explores the defeat of fear, the reclamation of time, and the rising of the oppressed.”
The song’s bold hook — I create and destroy, and don’t you push me, boy, ‘cause I’ll hunt you too — is a resounding anthem to female power. The dramatic horn section and in-your-face rhythm section makes the listener want to get up and take down the patriarchy — and have fun doing it.
Sarah & the Shirzans, which means “lionesses” in Persian, will release their upcoming EP on August 10, 2019. The album is expected to be a dynamic blend of R&B, funk, and soul sounds.
