Shades of Black: Hip-Hopera Mixing Hip-Hop & Opera
Zakiyyah, an artist by one name which inspires hope and guidance releases her new single ‘Shades of Black: Hip-Hopera.” Injecting a fresh, unique sound mixing two of her musical loves Hip-Hop and Opera. “Shades of Black: Hip-Hopera” produced by DJ Ronnie Ruff released on Friday, September 6, 2019, available on all digital platforms, and featured on Zakiyyah’s upcoming debut album, ‘African Import.’ The album like the single promises to be a continuation of the distinctive excellence that propelled her artistry into the ground-breaking force that the world will soon cherish.
Boston native Zakiyyah is a professional singer who is well versed in Opera, Jazz, R&B, and Gospel. After graduating as the Student Body President and Valedictorian of Boston Arts Academy with a major in voice, she pursued a degree in Political Science and Sociology from Wellesley College. Upon graduating from Wellesley College in 2012, she worked in communications for local City Councillor Tito Jackson, while also teaching voice part-time at her alma mater, Boston Arts Academy.
Long before being introduced to the awe-inspiring world of Opera, Zakiyyah was singing along to the mesmerizing sounds of Patti Labelle, New Birth, and Smokey Robinson that beamed from her parents’ stereos. In that Boston-home, she inherited the bold, socially-conscious values that cultivated her into the profound, luring artist and activist that she is today.
After graduating from Wellesley College with a Political Science and Sociology degree in 2012, Zakiyyah continued her vocal studies at New England Conservatory and landed the lead role in an original musical entitled “This is Treatment” soon after.
