“Give In” the latest album by Bryan Away

indie folk / experimental songwriter, Bryan Away has released an immersive new EP “Give In” an album which highlights his sobering vocal delivery and at times ominous, intense music.

Bryan Away is the recording alias of Elliot Korte, a songwriter based in Chicago. Bryan Away (Elliot Korte) has been writing and recording music his whole life, but kept it private until the release of his 2016 album, The Educated Youth, which was a complex and eclectic mix of songs detailing a coming of age.  For his most recent EP, Give In, Brian (Elliot) reached out to James McAlister (known for work with Sufjan Stevens, Bryce Desner) who, impressed by earlier demos, agreed to produce and perform drums and percussion. The five track project explores personal themes of loss, longing, and isolation over a foundation of intricate guitar work and creative percussion, drawing on a wide range of influences.

In commentary from the artist: “I began writing songs in 4th grade, and recording them on a cracked version of cool edit pro my friend’s older brother installed on my computer. Throughout middle school and high school I recorded many songs though strangely did not share them with anyone. During this time I pursued a career as an actor having some success, notably playing Ted Danson’s son in the TV show Damages, as well as a movie “Brother’s Shadow” at Tribecca film festival and many TV and radio commercials (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1594356/). Though my interest in acting waned after I started college I continued to write music while getting a degree in computer science. Only after graduating did I finally share my music with everyone and release my first album “The Educated Youth”. As more time has passed and more musical ideas formed in my mind I realized it was something I must pursue and am currently working on three upcoming releases simultaneously”. 

From the title track of the album “Give In”, we find a dark and stoic refrains, and there is a emotional cry of despair not only in the lyrics, but the music itself, as if it was another voice, not just a song, but almost an argument in the singers mind, the voices in his head fighting for control of a situation, to fight or to just relent to a pressure.

Now, where each song in their own are not as dark as Give In may be on its own, the songs work together to convey the message, and each are a different key to the doors in this hall of mirrors we call life, Bryan Away (Elliot Korte) has taken his singularly wonderful talent and made it possible for us to look deeply into his world.
