A Bit of Space debuts with “Seven” – single off their upcoming EP
The lead single for A Bit of Space’s upcoming EP is a fascinating multi level exercise from the 5 piece NY band.
The disconnected but ever intriguing relationship between lead vocalist and supporting musicianship on “Seven” is one that deserves to be witnessed and appreciated immensely. with it’s warm and jazzy opening, it escalates and morphs into something more ad very magical.
Opening on some isolated intimate chord strums the group works their way into a mellow-tempoed neo soul drift. Frontwoman Elazia Pollard is on a pedestal describing a convoluted relationship that seems to have fallen through. Metaphorical language suits her well as she longingly equates the idea of what she lost to pages in a book left unturned, an end unknown. It seems the framework is setup; the bass, guitar, and drums have all found reliable patterns, the topical direction is clear, and then we get to the 1:16 mark.
What doesn’t change is her story. She marches onward with more striking imagery as she’s now sorrowfully singing her way through a frenzy of freeform instrumentation. It’s rare to hear such an ambiguous soundscape overlayed with such a delineated narrative. A bit of a shock to the senses, but a welcome one. It all resolves wonderfully with the final lyrics alluding back to that dusty book in that old room. The one yearning for a conclusion, or at least a continuation, but doesn’t have the capability to write on its own.
“Seven” is a thrill ride through choppy emotional waters that serves as an excellent taste tester for the bands forthcoming EP. That project, titled “Tonight”, will be available everywhere Saturday March 21st!
