Heartracer’s latest Single/Video “Darling”

A cosmopolitan beat as brooding as it is chic rises from the silence peppered with the tonality of an equally smooth bassline. There’s emotion in their tethered groove, but it’s nothing compared to what the lead vocal is about to unleash. The rhythm is right, the melody is getting brighter, and by the time we’re in the midst of the opening stanza of verses, it’s difficult to deny how intoxicating a single Heartracer’s latest release, “Darling,” truly is.

Playing to their strengths and turning in one of their best single/video combos to date, Heartracer are a force to be reckoned with in “Darling,” and they’ve rightly got critics throughout the underground abuzz this March thanks to their passionate delivery featured in its four minutes of running time.

This track is hardly the only exciting pop/rock number you can find on the indie side of the dial right now, but what sets it apart from the rest has a lot less to do with cosmetic frills than some might assume. Heartracer approach the harmonies in “Darling” with a liberal attitude that has been growing steadily more emotional in tone with every release they’ve stuck their name on, and although the aesthetic here is as steeped in post-punk simplicity as it is decadent pop melodicism, nothing feels nor sounds particularly fragmented or as though it’s being forced into hybrid territory.

This is a spunky shot of life you can’t go wrong with this spring, and I think most alternative rock and pop fans will agree.
