Although slow-churning and rather pendulous at the start, it doesn’t take very long for Head Fake to stoke a melodic flame that will eventually grow into a wild firestorm of pop/rock majesty in their new single “I’m Found” and its surreal music video, and while this isn’t the first time in the last year that this experimental rock crew has issued something difficult for critics like myself to categorize (in terms of genre, that is), it just might be the most brooding example of their talents to see widespread release thus far.
From the onset of the instrumentation to the very instant the rhythm disappears behind a wall of harmonies and into the silence, there’s scarcely a moment where the texture of the band’s play isn’t as tangible to us as any of the words in this song are, which isn’t something that can typically be said of most modern singles – no matter what style of music they’re sporting.
The vocal is at the heart of the most daring melodies for us to behold in “I’m Found,” but its spot in the arrangement is made a focal point of our focus not through any scheming behind the soundboard. The instrumentation here is designed to cushion the singers’ verses as though they were fragile works of glass art, and while the framework of this composition is undisputedly more conservative than what the status quo would call for, this might be what gives the driving harmony in the song its signature chill-factor.
Head Fake are definitely onto something smart in this recent dispatch, and I plan on sticking around to see and hear where they take their creative magic next for sure.
