Sun & Flesh’s “Dig in Deep” (Single/Video)
With a crushing war drum to lead the way, Sun & Flesh’s “Dig in Deep” comes screaming into focus ready to pounce on us with a chest-beating rhythm that will get you head banging on the spot. However despite the grandiosity of its opening salvo of instrumentation, it isn’t until we get into the guts of this brand new single and music video – quite literally, in the case of the latter – that we can fully appreciate the gruesome grooves that this band is committing to master tape this April.
Sun & Flesh will stop at nothing in their quest to make the world sound and feel just a little more metallic via the release of “Dig in Deep” this spring, and for a taste of their skillset at its most unfiltered, you needn’t give their latest studio cut (or its music video) a cursory examination.
The main vocal is mostly melodic in this song, and it’s easily the most accessible feature on the sonic spectrum for those who aren’t familiar with the grating tenacity this group can turn out when they’re firing on all cylinders. The guitars force us to the edge of our seats with a tension-inducing riff that swells as we get deeper into the track, and just when we think a bit of catharsis is about to escape the smothering blanket of bass and drum wallop, it’s pushed asunder on the back of a metalcore-style breakdown anything but retrospective in tone and design.
Sun & Flesh might not have broken the mold when they composed this white-hot slab of rock revelry, but one thing is for certain – in this single, they assert themselves as being among the underground’s best stewards of heavy music in 2020.
