On the back of an endearing violin’s modulating melody, Tyson onBEATS begins to colorize a bruising beat that will serve as the cornerstone for intrigue in “BLVK Mirror,” his latest single and music video.
There isn’t anything optimistic about the tone of this instrumentation, but there’s definitely something churning beneath the swelling groove – and it’s only going to get more powerful once Tyson onBEATS starts rapping. This is a hip-hop ballad cultivated for the modern American protester, and to be quite specific, those who are taking up the cause of Black Lives Matter at this critical juncture in the movement’s history.

We find ourselves in the streets, looking out through a black and white filtration in the video for “BLVK Mirror,” the symbolism of the color stylization finding a way of affecting us even when the narrative in the lyrics is the most dominant force here. Tyson onBEATS is so controlled, so disciplined in his attack that it’s as if he’s intentionally muzzling whatever true anger he’s holding within his heart in this moment. His words are scornful, but there’s a feeling of restraint that is hauntingly absent from the visual evidence of first responders abusing the authority granted to them by a vulnerable society,
“BLVK Mirror” finds no redeeming climax, no light at the end of the tunnel – it instead leaves the audience to ponder the statements made by Tyson onBEATS and the consequences of what we allow (or don’t allow) to take place in the present and future. Make no mistake about it; there are a lot of protest songs that belong on your stereo this month, but if there’s one hip-hop track that I would deem of a higher caliber above the average, it’s this one. Simply put, Tyson onBEATS says more than most words can account for in this latest and potentially greatest release so far.
