Single Review: Izzie’s Caravan “Roadkill Rita”

Following on from their previous single, ‘Drownin’ Man’s Blues’, Izzie’s Caravan deliver a raw blues/rock track that sounds like a late night cruise down Sunset Strip. Ripping into a Hendrix style introduction, resplendent with overdriven guitar solos, the band speed through the three and a half minute single with blistering intensity. There is method in the madness, with sardonic lyrics entertaining the listener. Images of  uninhibited excess form against the backdrop of the band’s carefully orchestrated cacophony, designed to enliven the most cynical of audiences. There is a nostalgia to the art of Izzie’s Caravan, which is perhaps not as suitable for modern digital formats as it would be for a traditional vinyl pressing. There is an analog quality to the band’s sonic aesthetic which begs for the insertion of random noise between the grooves. Yet, the clarity of the recording demonstrates high production values and a refined mix. Cleverly, Izzie’s Caravan focuses the listener’s attention on the dynamics, rather than the finesse, of the band’s music. ‘Roadkill Rita’ is another surprising discovery along the highway in Izzie’s Caravan.
