Lured into the fold by a seductive voice, we’re not given much of a choice when listening to the first few bars in “Groove-A,” the new single and music video from pop musician A-Lister; it’s either join in with the ensuing rhythm, or run the risk of being driven crazy by its curiously repetitious thrust.
The former is a heck of a lot more enjoyable than the latter (speaking from personal experience, of course), and for pop enthusiasts, putting this track down is awfully difficult once it’s been given that important first-listen. A-Lister brought his A-game to this piece, and couldn’t sound any more primed for the mainstream stage because of it.
The swing of the percussion is actually as charming as the lyrical delivery is, but when they’re joined together in the chorus, it’s almost as if A-Lister and his collaborating vocalists in this track are creating as much brawn with their harmonies as the drummer is the skins. “Groove-A” has the beefiness of a much heavier rock n’ roll tune than it actually is – when we take a look at its bones, this is more an homage to the classic pop stylings of a bygone era than it is anything most millennial critics would probably refer to as ‘left-field’ or ‘experimental.’
Classy but unsophisticated, cute but far from saccharine, A-Lister’s “Groove-A” is just enough sugar and all the right spice to put its indie creator on the map for mainstream households this September, and while he’s shown hints of greatness prior to this latest cut, there’s no debating whether or not this is his best stuff yet. A-Lister has the benefit of knowing how to make a hybrid without sounding cheap in his adherence to old school artistic parameters, and if I were him, I’d exploit this gift for everything it’s worth and then some.
