Twin Flames releases New Single/LP

Twin Flames aren’t looking to fit in with a mainstream North American pop model in their new album Omen and its first single “Battlefields.” They’re not trying to impress critics like myself with their ability to adhere to the standards of a major label conglomerate, nor are they giving up the elements of their sound that make them thoroughly Canadian in exchange for some American cosmetics tethered exclusively to this contemporary era.

In “Battlefields,” they declare war on a standard in the music industry and society in general that needed to be brought up for debate a long time ago, and in Omen, they illustrate a skillset that has not only come into its own – it’s now a lot more muscular than any of their peers’. 

There are some synth rock influences in Omen’s “Who I Am,” “Shadows” and “Giants (Reprise)” that, especially when blended with the Inuit components of the music, results in something I can’t even put a title on in this record. The stylization of “Outcast” and “Follow Me” indicates Twin Flames’ disinterest in anything other than a physical, textured punch to even their simplest of melodic constructs, and while “Battlefields” is the biggest draw here, it’s joined by performances in “Without Tears” and “Human” that could probably do just as well in a commercial setting as its lyric video has. I didn’t know these two could be a heavy rock band if they wanted to, but in this LP, they really make a point of leaving no aesthetical stone within their reach unturned. 

Omen and its cornerstone single are enigmatic treats that are incredibly intimate in tone and delivery, and though they’re among a handful of quality Canadian acts I’m keeping on my radar in 2020, I think Twin Flames show us enough of their collective soul in this album to be considered one of the best and brightest acts in all of their scene this year.

They’re giving indie fans something really fun to break down as the summer turns to autumn, and as soon as they have the ability to get back onto the stage, I hope I have the chance to see them perform at least half of this LP live.
