Like the bright stage lights and heavenly clouds that we see in the opening shots of the video for Sharon Hendrix’s new single “Believe and Become,” there’s something ethereal about the harmony that serves as this song’s compositional bedrock, and it all begins with Hendrix herself. An indie musician who has been gaining some traction with fans of vocal pop in 2020 like few others have been able to keep up with, Hendrix submits a tempting new power ballad in “Believe and Become” that is almost certain to leave her name seared in the minds of anyone who takes the time to listen.
There’s a moderate synth component to the melody in “Believe and Become” that had the potential to introduce some negative plasticity into our leading lady’s sound, but because of how elegantly it’s been arranged alongside the other elements in the song (primarily the bassline, which is a true agent of evocation unto itself), it actually creates more warmth.
Hendrix can sew honest emotion into the lyrics and music of just about anything she’s recorded in the last five years, and in this single, she only makes it all the more difficult for her rivals to try and stifle her momentum.
“Believe and Become” is less than three and a half minutes long, but for what it lacks its running time it compensates us for in larger than life harmonies that could be more than enough to bring Sharon Hendrix some of the glitz and glamor of mainstream success to have evaded her output so far. She has a lot of talent, and it’s being put to incredible use here without overextending what she’s capable of producing on her own, without a lot of tech interference. Hendrix has my heart, and I can’t wait to hear what she comes up with next.
