“CodeX” and “Imperium” by Sonarpilot

Lost somewhere between the beginning and end of time in a sea of sounds that seem destined to counteract the presence of one another with nothing more than tenacious brawn, we find ourselves in the eight minute epic that is “CodeX,” the new music video from Sonarpilot currently out and making a splash online this fall. While there isn’t much catharsis to be found in this track, there is a lot of emotionality, only it’s hidden behind cloudy bands of texture that listeners unfamiliar with the gutsiness of Sonarpilot’s compositional wit might be a little taken aback by. Those with experience know what to do next – sit back, relax, and let the music take you to another dimension.

We following a lazy river of fragile but very beautiful tones and colors in “CodeX” to find ourselves on the other side of madness relatively unscathed, but in the case of the other video out from Sonarpilot this fall – titled “Imperium” – taking things slow simply isn’t on the agenda.

There’s an urgency to every step we take alongside the smoldering beat in this single, which ebbs with the synthetic melody in the forefront of them mix not unlike the tide on a southern California beach. Gorgeous? Of course. Disturbingly menacing in the right moments? You’d better believe it.

I was somewhat familiar with the collective works of Sonarpilot before getting turned on to this pair of tracks and their music videos – all of which are a part of The Mirage Project – but I don’t know that I was giving the brand all of the respect it deserved before taking these sounds in recently. Ambient experimentalists are a rare breed, and to have established as much consistency and a reputation for turning in gems as he has up until this point, you know this is an artist who can be counted on for a spellbinding listen.
