IndiePulse Reviews: A Gulf Coast Christmas

Gulf Coast Records releases a Contemporary Blues on November 13th.

With Halloween only just a few days behind us and a historic election now over, we look towards the upcoming holiday season with some hope for better days. Our nation, and the world coping with the pandemic and wanting things to return to normal, the coming Thanksgiving is one with some excitement, we are planning and preparing, some with friends and family to be with, some may be alone, yet we are all wishing for the coming New Year to be one filled with promise. In this time, one thing that brings us all together is the music of the season, many artists release music that looks to inspire and bring good cheer, and I am very happy to say that our beloved friends at Gulf Coast Records is doing their part to make the yuletide bright.

This coming November 13th, Gulf Coast Records is releasing A Gulf Coast Christmas, a collection of holiday inspired Blues tracks by a roster of Blues Greats, fabulous new comers and seasoned stage veterans with a combined legacy of talented performance like no other.

The album features music by Mike Zito, Albert Castiglia, Kat Riggins, The Proven Ones, Mark May, John ‘Blues’ Boyd, Lisa and Kid Andersen, Diana Rein, Kevin Burt, LeRoux, Jimmy Carpenter, Billy Price, Sayer and Joyce, Thomas Atlas, Odds Lane, and Tony Campanella. A treasury of Christmas covers as well as seven original songs by the label’s talented and diverse artists.

The blues, as a music genre, is long known for moments of inspiration, winding tales, both happy and sometimes sad, yet always entertaining, it allows us to look upon our own lives, and gives us the ability to be thankful for what we have, to be able to cherish our lives and loves and bring us closer to one another. A Gulf Coast Christmas is exactly the type of album we need for the coming holiday.

Mike Zito, whom has been working to keep music relevant and substantial during the year of lockdown, brings us All I Got for Christmas Is the Blues, a fun and brilliant song as well as his rendition of the classic Run Rudolph Run which is a holiday classic rock infused anthem.

Billy Price lays down the law in Christmas Comes But Once A Year, and the label’s breakout artist Kat Riggins just blows you away with her song It Ain’t Christmas, a blues love song that is just a Christmas miracle in itself. Not to be outdone, the “Six String Siren” Diana Rein just wows you with her hypnotic voice and guitar talents in her song Ring the Bells…in fact each and every song on this album is sure to meet your music needs and may make this one of the best holiday seasons ever.

One track that I truly loved playing over and over while reviewing this album was Please Come Home For Christmas by Sayer and Joyce, a song that I always had a special place for, I have heard it done many times before, but never so beautiful performed and the vocal are divine, the power of love is strong and pleasing to behold in this one. And for a wild sleigh ride, you have to hear Odds Lane’s rendition of the classic Santa Claus Is Back in Town, big and bouncy blues that rocks you to the core of your candy cane. A Gulf Coast Christmas is just one hit after another.

So whether you are lucky enough to be able to be with each and every loved one in the coming months, or you may have to brave the new year in some seclusion, come share your time with the Gulf Coast Family this year, with A Gulf Coast Christmas , let them pour you a stiff Eggnog and welcome you home.
