Qvntro’s “Hold On”

High above the city streets, looking down from the clouds, it’s difficult to know just how much life is really taking place below. Looking closer, we find people dancing in the streets, on hardwood, on cement sidewalks and carpeted living room floors. This is what vibrancy looks and feels like when it’s allowed to run free, and in the music video for Qvntro’s “Hold On,” it’s the centerpiece of that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the song’s beat in visual form. Qvntro came to do big things this season, and in “Hold On,” those big things are realized in the most tangible and forward means possible.

While I didn’t need to see the video to pick up on the spunkiness of this track’s central narrative, I do think the two go together better than a lot of other single/video combos I’ve seen in the surreal year of 2020. There’s no forcing fluff into the imagery and trying to sell it as a club vibe; this is straight-up charisma derived from the same place the music itself is – the soul. Qvntro could be accused of being a little on-the-nose with this one, but to me, the efficiency of the concept and the composition are worth writing home about this December.

Though none of us are going to be hitting the nightclub anytime soon, Qvntro has us more than covered with the stunningly cosmopolitan performance they’re delivering unto us in “Hold On” this season, and I don’t think I’ll be the lone pop critic giving it a standing ovation. There’s simply too much thunder coming off of the speakers when I press play on this track for it to go underrated in this review, and despite some of its more indulgent elements taking a starring role behind the beat, I think its sound has a chance to pummel a lot of the indie competition heading into the new year.
