Single Review: Ten Penny Gypsy “Your True You”

A real highlight of their album ‘Fugitive Heart’, Ten Penny Gypsy’s track ‘Your True You’ is a track that is both thought-provoking and nostalgic. Lead by a nimble guitar line, tambourines and a steady drum pattern, a first listen of ‘Your True You’ will already have you feeling ready for a folk-country festival, or a sunset drink at your local bar. The latest offering from Ten Penny Gypsy possesses a breezy quality that is further established by an easy, effortless delivery. The experienced duo has really stamped their signature sound with songs like these, and ‘Your True You’ is another classic example of their unique vocal brand. As feel-good as the song sounds, ‘Your True You’ does have a valuable message – even though times may be hard (“Though your life is looking bleak now/Shrouded in fog and gray”), things will eventually get better, and you will one day find your true self (“Don’t know which road to choose/Don’t know which path will bring you closer/To your true you”). This track’s message is especially potent during a tough year for all, where we’ve mainly had to stay at home to battle this pandemic (“Though your life looks like an hourglass/Sitting there watching time pass/Everything is gonna be alright”). Although this is an easy listen, ‘Your True You’ contains a deeper message that is applicable to all.
