Rolling into place on the back of a bluesy groove and quickly taking on the rhythm of something designed specifically with the beach in mind, the new single and music video “Motor Oil” from Tsunami of Sound is the sort of blast from the past any rock fan is happy to come across. Though not entirely psychedelic in style, this track definitely takes a couple of cues from the old school hard rock of yesteryear and gives it a surreal update perfect for those who prefer a bit of insularity in their heavy music. Versatile but focused where it counts, “Motor Oil” is fun from start to finish.
The music video for this song is relatively simple and features visuals that are animated, sparing us the live action props and cringe-worthy indie attributes that have become just a little bit tired in the past year of single-dimension pop. The music itself is the only true star here, and though the track is only about two minutes long – excluding the intro portion of the video – it never sounds limited or cut-short. When you have a clear goal in mind, things tend to click easier, and that’s definitely the case with this release.
Rockers needn’t fear – 2020 might have been as close to a total loss as any of us would want to get, but that doesn’t mean the likes of Tsunami of Sound are going to let December come to a conclusion without a taste of original heat to keep us going into the next year. “Motor Oil” burns more like gasoline when you’ve got the volume knob cranked up full blast, and if you pay as much attention to the indie rock scene as I do, you know just how rare a treasure that makes its molten-hot melody in an era like the present.
