Makes My Blood Dance’s New Single “Communion”
Some songs just make you want to throw your fists into the air and develop a perfectly synchronized stomp alongside the beat of the drums, and Makes My Blood Dance’s new single “Communion” is definitely one of them. Even without seeing their flashy music video for this track, I could tell from the moment I pressed play and got through the brief intro to “Communion” that Makes My Blood Dance are ascending to true rockstar status here. They’re happy to be the hard-hitting rockers with no aesthetical interest in the pop medium, and here, they sound more prepared for the primetime than ever before.

The chorus in this single is downright epic as it comes together in such quick secession to the verse leading into its hook, and while I’m not usually one to say as much, I think the way “Communion” was built makes it clear that pop-metal is still very viable in the 20’s. Makes My Blood Dance aren’t straight-up reshaping a template ultimately perfected by Van Halen more than four decades ago in this performance, but you’d have to be completely ignorant to the metal genre to ignore the kinship this material has with the hook-powered heavy music of the genre’s most classical age.
There’s still a lot that Makes My Blood Dance have to prove, and in this brand new single and its music video, they’re acting like it and setting a firm example of how their hard rock peers should broach the early portion of their careers in the spotlight. They’re leaving out all of the pretentiousness that usually comes with the kind of hype they’ve been getting since 2019, and in doing so leaving more room for the efficient songcraft that both their fans and critics like myself want to hear more than anything else.
