Single Review: Davy Williamson “Thin Disguise”

Music has a healing power that, I personally think, is quite underrated. It can help you through your darkest moments, and it can elevate your brightest ones, even more. I don’t know about you, but that has certainly been the case for me.

And in that regard, that is exactly the feeling that I got when I listened to Davy Williamson’s first solo release, Thin Disguise: a reminder of how the energy and passion of music can lift you during the ordeals of your life.

For those of you that, perhaps, are not familiar with his career, Williamson is a Rock multi-instrumentalist, who was also behind the formation of bands such as Third Class Passenger and Ma-Shot-Pa. So, we’re talking about a musician who already has experience in the business, and that is clearly shown with this single.

The guitar carries the whole weight of the song with slow, powerful riffs, as Williamson delivers melodic and somewhat somber vocal lines, which complements perfectly with the instrumental side of things. I’m usually a bigger fan of faster songs, but I like the slow-paced approach that this track has, because it adds to the ambiance, and it makes for a much more compelling listen.

This is a song that works very well because Williamson delivers a lot with the vocal lines. I mean, take that element away from the song and, while the instrumentals were good, I think the singing complements the whole package, which is something that is always worth taking into account–I think people have made singing a bit overrated when viewed as another factor in the songwriting side of things.

Overall, it’s a very fun song and it has a lot of hooks, which is something that a single should have, in order to get people’s attention. Williamson is a seasoned professional musician, and you can clearly tell with this particular song.

He has an EP coming up, and I personally think that is going to be quite promising, as Thin Disguise is a very nice appetizer of things to come in Williamson’s career.
