Exclusive Interview with Water Tower
Where are you originally from?
We started in Portland OR in 2003 but recorded our first album in Eugene OR in 2008. I am from Santa Cruz California.
How was the decision to move to LA made?
During a phone conversation with the album’s (Fly Around) producer Don Bolles of the Germs told me “it’s better”. With that, I decided to leave Portland. It would help me finish the album, and it would also help me think that if I moved locations, my problems would stay in Portland. Not true lol… my problems came with me.
What challenges did you face as a musician in a new environment?
I had to stare my problems face-down, with very few people willing to trust me. So I went out to the side of the road and played my music until enough people were willing to trust me.
Can you offer your experience to the artist that is thinking about making a change for their music?
If you are meant to be a music person, you will know this in the middle of your stomach. Once you have admitted to yourself that music is the elixir of life, then it is time to shape every passing moment towards the goal of playing more music, trusting in music, and in turn, living off of music.
What do you have cooking up right now with your music?
We are about to drop the music video for “Covid Island” as part of my rapper alter-ego 182 Water!
