“Do It Again” by Trav Torch

Like it or not, sex is the name of the game in most pop music right now, and where the subject might still be taboo for some listeners, it’s clearly become the topic of discussion for the vast majority of music fans around the globe in 2021. There’s subtle differences in how human sexuality is broken down from one genre to the next, with trap artists typically encapsulating the crudest variety of the lot (though debatably no less valid aesthetically). On the flipside, we find R&B singers like Trav Torch, whose new love ballad “Do It Again” adopts a much more clandestine approach to getting us steamy just by turning up the stereo.

Trav Torch doesn’t front when building up the hook in this piece; he puts all of his focus on his vocal from the jump, avoiding temptation to be overambitious with the harmony simply by creating an especially defined place for his voice in the big picture. The warmth of his tone is enough to make even the pickier of progressive R&B addicts feel really weak in the knees, and I’ve found that his charm seems to get strong with most every listen a track like this one is afforded.

Layering the vocals to give the mix as much depth was key to giving the chorus a lot of additional color when we need it the most, but I’m hesitant to say that any of the chills in this number exist solely because of what’s transpiring behind the glass. With an artist like Trav Torch, a lot of the work normally done in the producer’s chair plays out in the booth, merely in the detailed performance my man is putting up without any force or directional encouragement. You can’t teach what he’s got going for him here, even if you wanted to.

If you weren’t already a fan of this guy before giving “Do It Again” a spin, my gut is telling me you’re going to be into Trav Torch after only a single listen. The music video for the song somehow sports even more of a sizzle than the track does on its own with all of the lights cut out, but the implied action taking place on screen isn’t the main reason why. In any scenario, it’s always Trav Torch himself who generates the most heat when he’s playing, and that’s why I believe he’s going to be successful in the pop game for a long time to come.
