Lanai Releases New Music Video for “Joanna” Studio Live Version
First song from the sessions will be out on Feb 23rd.
Finnish songwriter duo Lanai is releasing a five part live in studio series. First song to be released is Joanna from the debut album Ship’s Bell followed by singles Follow the Sun and Hold onto Nothing during March 2021. The remaining half of the series consists of two unreleased, new songs anticipating their upcoming second record.
The songs are to promote both the debut album Ship’s Bell as well as the upcoming record bridging the gap between them. “However, Lanai Arctic Pulse Sessions is a separate thing in its own right and will be released also as an EP later this year”, Tanja says.
The studio live took place at the Wolfbeat Studios in Oulu, Finland, and the band’s vision was to create immersive one-room live takes of each of the 5 songs with full band arrangements, while also including a small-sized string section in some of the songs. “We wanted to utilize one room as efficiently as possible to bring out the character of each of the songs in a live setting by changing the arrangements, lightning, microphones and the placement of musicians themselves,” Petri describes. The session was directed, filmed and cut by Finnish filmmaker Iisakki Kennilä.
“Joanna is a pretty traditional singer-songwriter tune but it has a unique color to it”, says Petri. “It’s where warm and delicate vintage sounds meet a lush, almost cinematic orchestration.” The album version of Joanna (as well as the title song Ship’s Bell) features string arrangement and performance by Rob Moose (Glen Hansard, Paul Simon, Laura Marling, Blake Mills, Bon Iver and many more). Despite the melancholic undercurrent of the song, it bears a strong sense of hope and uplift and leaves the listener reconciled.
