Barney releases latest single ‘Le Vaudreuil’
Celebrating and reflecting on cultural ties between Britain and France, 'Le Vaudreuil' is the latest single to be released by local Cambridgeshire singer-songwriter Barney
This is the fully-fledged version of a melody originally composed to mark the 20th anniversary of a local, Anglo-French Twin Town collaboration. However the reworking of the song also reminds us of the international importance of music in creating a sense of togetherness and ‘completeness’ between old neighbours during changing and challenging times. “Brexit may come and Covid may go, but our nations will always be enriched by their mutual coexistence” in the words of Barney.
On the musical side of things, Barney’s ‘other half’ is Barrie who would usually take on the role of the lead vocalist as well as being responsible for instrumentation, production and recording. However on this occasion Barney, having in his words ‘marginally the better French accent’ took the microphone himself. The vocals are laden with reverb to give the track an otherworldly ambience. This unashamedly taps into the nostalgia of La Profonde France whilst allowing the lyrics to convey an optimism in the strength of the ‘French Connection” with its nearest neighbours.
A composer with eclectic tastes, Barney began recording his songs after a chance meeting with Barrie, who is now Barney’s creative partner. With Barrie’s under-the-stairs studio, Barney has recorded and released 25 songs in the past 9 years. Barney was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2012.
All his songs bar one have been written since his diagnosis which leads him to wonder whether his medication has been a factor in releasing his creativity.
With songs ranging from heavy rock to blues and wistful ballads, Barney continues to challenge himself creatively with each and every release.
