Mint 400 Records: A Spirited Label with Heart
Mint 400 Records was founded in 2007 by indie music musician and singer Neil Sabatino of the band Fairmont. The independent record label initially signed established North Jersey rock bands and folk acts, like Theodore Grimm, Any Day Parade, Jesse Ian Dunn and the One & Nines, and reissued albums by some of North Jersey’s veteran bands like Hero Pattern, Fairmont, The Multi-Purpose Solution, and The Milwaukees.
Other notable guest musicians on the label include Victoria Williams on the track “Blood Red Shoes” by Son of the Velvet Rat, Matt Pryor & Max Bemis on Ladybirds “Regional Community Theater” LP, Matthew Caws of Nada Surf on The Minus Scale album “Hotter” and Chris Collingwood wrote complete liner notes for The Campbell Apartment’s “Curmudegeon” Album.
In 2016, they began working with the New Jersey independent label Sniffling Indie Kids. The two labels joined on several compilation albums, and founded the North Jersey Indie Rock Festival, which showcases almost two dozen bands each year from local record labels. Mint 400 Records recording artist Ruby Bones climbed the Billboard Heatseeker Middle Atlantic Chart to No. 7 for their first release “Heart Of Darkness”.
As of 2020, Mint 400 Records has made more than 400 releases. In addition to artist releases, the label also makes compilation and tribute albums including tributes to The Beach Boys, Nirvana, Link Wray, Lou Reed and Tom Petty. At the end of 2020 Mint 400 Records along with B.CALM to press re-released version of the 2001 album Heartbreak in Stereo by New Jersey band Pencey Prep, the band Frank Iero was in before he joined My Chemical Romance. This included a limited edition vinyl pressing of 1000 records that sold out in 3 hours.
The label focuses on radio promotion and has had dozens of releases chart on the NACC College Radio charts since 2010 and so far in 2021 Fairmont, Sink Tapes, Gelax, Blue Vervain, Dream Home, Ruby Bones, and Poggy have all broken the top 200. In 2021, Mint 400 Records announced new jazz and instrumental sub-label, Raining Music, with the signing of Jersey City funk jazz band The Funky JC’s and in addition Clamb, an avant garde jazz band from Boston.
