Anna Smyrk reveals new video for latest fuzzed-out indie pop single ‘Human Condition’ + Victorian Tour in June
“this one really rises and stirs things up in you. there's middle kids and alex lahey in your 'sounds like' and that feels about right!” – Declan Byrne
Earlier this month Melbourne singer songwriter AnnaSmyrk revealed her first new music in almost two years with her wonderfully catchy pop-rock number ‘HumanCondition’. The track was instantly added to Double J national rotation. It has pricked ears and tickled spines throughout the media both at home and abroad with its infectious melody and pulsing indie rock vibe, teeming with frustration over seemingly endless disconnect and loneliness. Now Anna is excited to share the track’s accompanying clip, courtesy of the team at ShoelaceCreative.
A song catalyzed by Melbourne’s lockdown, ‘HumanCondition’ speaks to the feelings of isolation and detachment still lingering. The video exemplifies this with Anna and her friend – fellow artist StavShaul – sitting at a table attempting to reconnect whilst neither party is ever quite on the same page. Stav’s literal and metaphorical buffering is heightened by Anna’s fuzzy vocals, punchy drums and big, bold guitars, serving as a harsh reminder that each of us will recover from this at a different pace. ShoelaceCreative director Ty Ridgeway explains, “We wanted to explore the relationship between two people existing on different wavelengths of time and emotion and the breakdown of communication that happens because of this.”
After trickling two folk-flavoured EPs in 2018 and ‘19, Anna will soon be releasing her latest offering, with ‘HumanCondition’ being the first taste of what’s to come. The songs are smart, fun and exciting with big pop hooks draw you in, and hidden layers of complexity that emerge the more you listen. To celebrate the release, AnnaSmyk will be heading on a run of Victorian dates next month, launching the single with her full live band of AlexBurkoy (Tinpan Orange) on violin and guitars, HollyThomas (Quivers, Husky) on drums and Loz Irwin-Ray (Belly Savalas) on bass and keys. With live sneak peaks expected from her forthcoming EP – a record that Anna promises is equally satisfying for word nerds and pop-rock obsessives alike – these shows are not to be missed.
