Corrine Cook’s “Blah Blah Blah”
When researching Corinne Cook’s online presence, I was shocked to discover that she wasn’t a bigger name! Upon listening to her latest single, “Blah Blah Blah,” I couldn’t get the catchy tune out of my head and found myself humming it at all hours of the day.
The only proper prescription was to, of course, find more songs from Cook to get stuck in my head and, wow, what a great few knockout albums she’s had so far! After playing her two LPs, Dressed Up for Goodbye and Yes I Can, I felt pretty well-versed in the person behind the music — judging from her work, Corinne Cook is an artist that is eager to put herself on the record, both in the literal and metaphorical sense. Her motives are never shrouded with her lyrics boldly saying whatever’s on her mind in true country fashion, and “Blah Blah Blah” is no different. Offering up some (deeply) relatable content, Cook finds herself honing in on the annoyance of being stuck in a social setting you’ve long since grown tired of. The journey she takes listeners on throughout the new single’s brief runtime is never predictable but always remains an earworm. The cheeky mentality and headspace that is kept up from start to finish is a refreshing foray away from the other recent quarantine singles that have been popping up.
Cook’s background as a veteran came as a shock to me as the single initially shows nothing to convey such a history; some of the singles off of previous albums and outings, however, portrayed deep emotions attached to such a roller coaster of a career, and the result of Cook’s layered and nuanced artistic bag is that much more indebted to her time serving her country. The way she can give pieces of herself at different times is honorable and extremely impressive, as most artists tend to let their egos drive their careers and permeate every song they release. “I love the fact that I’m basically telling […] unique stories that all convey different feelings,” Cook has said on her website. The impressive approach from an artist to maintain a past as storied as her own while still finding time to release energetic, catchy bops like “Blah Blah Blah” is a magnetic force to keep in your back pocket.
There’s plenty to take away from the musical makeup of “Blah Blah Blah,” from Cook’s vocals that never miss a beat to the song’s lyrics that feel as humored with themselves as audiences will undoubtedly be. The instrumentation doesn’t break the mold when it comes to country-pop compositions but why fix it if it ain’t broke, right? The attention to keeping one of the greatest strengths of country music, in my opinion, by offering a through-line of a narrative structure gets extra points from me, and Cook seems to be in love with the genre with how flawlessly she settles into each of her songs. “Blah Blah Blah” is no exception in the varied musical repertoire of Corinne Cook, go give it a listen and try to get it out of your head!
