The Dirty Shirts – “Shake”

Dallas-based The Dirty Shirts are back with their brand new Dance Floor Rock n Roll single, “Shake,” a cut off of their upcoming full-length album. It’s an energetic number that’s groovy and upbeat, never slowing down and keeping its energy up throughout the entire song. So, let’s give it a closer look in our review!

Vocalist and lead guitarist Nick Santa Maria does an excellent job evoking the style and flair of other groovy soulful rock acts like The Rolling Stones, though that’s not to say the “Shake” is in any way derivative. It simply takes the concept, allowing The Dirty Shirts to inject their own brand of rock punk flair into the mix, and it works out quite well in the single.

Nick’s vocal performance on here is excellent, with all the swagger and personality you’d come to expect from the frontman of a band. Strong vocal hooks and driven, funky bass lines accompany the artist as things keep up a steady and speedy pace. It gives all the instruments a lot of space to breathe and do their own thing, getting their moments to shine through the arrangements.

“Shake” also features a guest vocal spot from Rachel Farrell, whose addition contributes greatly to the overall tone and atmosphere of the song. All these combined with the crisp and solid production work makes for a very fun song that’s easy to enjoy and hypnotic in how catchy it can be. Even the huge, marching drums can add to the atmosphere, which also ties into the themes of the song.

In case you were wondering, “Shake” is about two people meeting by chance in the haze of a club or a concert, developing an obsessive infatuation without knowing whether or not they will see each other again. It’s a fascinating premise for a dance-rock song like this, but it’s also a very fun theme to play with, and Nick and company take this premise and run with it.

It captures those feelings of infatuation, uncertainty and passion perfectly, especially when paired with Nick’s delivery. Overall, it all contributes to making the song a great piece, one that you can’t miss out on. It’s all good stuff, and we can’t wait to see what’s next from the band with their upcoming album right around the corner.
