Single Review: Psyclo “Trephination”

Heavy darkness permeates the entirety of Psyclo’s “Trephination.” Industrial churn, dubstep’s famous drops, these play a critical role in the overall scope of the sound. Truly selling the approach however are the impeccable vocals. Delivered with the right degree of unflinching honesty, she holds absolutely nothing back. By doubling and tripling down on the sense of wonder, the song gains this kaleidoscopic effect to it. Over the course of the work, she hardly feels the need to raise her voice. Instead, it is this subdued aspect to it that gives it that additional sense of intimacy.

Delicate guitar work gains a gauzy disposition, for it sets the scene for what follows. Word choice gives the work a therapeutic quality. The verses get woven together, ensuring that there is a vulnerability to it. Everything about it features a vulnerability of sorts. All of it has a quietness to it, with the beats hit on an emotional cadence. Layer upon layer gives the song a kaleidoscopic quality. Bass work has a delicacy, emphasizing the sheer power of her voice. A quiet kind of strength radiates over the course of the track, from the crisp beats that hit just the right way to the whole of the melody, a mournful, almost tragic one that has an exquisite richness to it.

“Trephination” has a mysterious, cryptic quality to it, for Psyclo rarely, if ever, emerges from the shadows.
