JP Soars and his band The Red Hots first burst onto the collective consciousness of the blues community when they won the Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge in 2009, with JP winning the Albert King Award for ‘Best Guitarist’ in the same competition.
A singer/songwriter and guitarist best known for his distinctive gypsy-swing jazz playing with plenty of rock potency, Soars was recently honored with a “Blues Rock Artist of The Year” Nomination by the 40th Annual Blues Music Awards.
JP’s first CD, 2008’s Back of My Mind, garnered rave reviews and received a considerable airplay on Sirius XM Radio and other blues stations around the world. Soars’ 2011 release, More Bees With Honey, was voted second “Coolest CD of The Year” by Little Steven’s Underground Garage on Sirius XM and enjoyed several weeks in the Top 5 on BB King’s Bluesville. Living Blues magazine called the album “a potent mixture of mostly original tunes by the multi-talented Soars…Soars’ talent is evident and his influences pure.”
In 2012 JP released As Live As It Gets, a duo album with heralded guitarist Jimmy Thackery that was recorded on the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise.
The Florida-based Soars has released six albums in nearly fifteen years including Full Moon in Memphis (2014), J.P. Soars: Live From the Netherlands (2015), Southbound I-95 (2018), and his latest, Let Go of the Reins (2019), produced by renowned guitarist Tab Benoit for Tab’s own Whiskey Bayou Records label. The latter garnered some of the best reviews of his career, with Blues Blast Magazine describing it as “a super set of tunes that will make your Summer travels a lot of fun as you savor this CD over and over again. Highly recommend it!” No Depression added, “Soars has put together a rowdy, swampy package bustin’ at the seams, ready to get loose and spread the red-hot glory emanating from his fingertips.”
Soars and his powerhouse trio The Red Hots includes drummer Chris Peet and bassist Cleveland Frederick. Soars and Peet have played together for the past sixteen years; Frederick, “the new guy,” has been with the band since 2016. They’ve proven their mettle on national and international stages, played blues festivals from Belgium to Brazil, and shared stages with the likes of Buddy Guy and Joe Bonamassa.
