“Love Is An Emergency.” This impetuosity and urgency can be felt by the dynamic lyricism of R&B singer/songwriter Indigo on her latest single, Rock The Boat. This up-tempo, dance-along jam exemplifies the feelings of summer and the sexual energy that comes from days on the beach and cruising the shores in a speedboat. “Rock the boat, want you to jump in my ocean, perfect where you got the motion.” These vocal analogies help add to the vivid imagery that is only facilitated and reinforced by that deep groove rhythm. The main melody and hook of Rock The Boat are high-energy, channeling a slightly syncopated main beat which is contrasted by a sharp snare on the downbeat to keep the timing.
The bass is very low in the register, allowing this track to fit perfectly in any club setting, as this groove will shake the very foundation as the dancers get their movements in. Couple this deep rhythm with the harmonious vocal performance of Indigo, and the frequency spectrum fills out fully. There are clearly multiple tracks of vocals layered together to give the vocals a fuller sound, as the harmony fills out all the upper overtones, allowing the vocals to carry out fully over the mix. Lyrically, Indigo utilizes that “Love Is An Emergency” metaphor to full value as the theme revolves around this need to feel the embrace of a lover or another dancer on the dancefloor.
As a classic R&B track, Rock The Boat hits all the main points to allow this song to be a sure hit with R&B, Dance, and Urban commercial radio playlists. The rapid release of lyrics throughout the verse sections also grabs the attention of a Hip-Hop vibe, as the suave, majestic R&B stylings are juxtaposed with a freestyle rap adding to the revolving time and key changes. Coupled with an aesthetically appealing video, Rock The Boat satisfies any contemporary R&B fan while challenging newcomers to the power of the funk that the genre carries. Audiences are given a performance perspective which satisfies the curiosity of what to expect from this artist as the music is performed live. This track would also be well-suited for more romantic instances as the overall elegance of the vocals combined with that deep pulsating groove also triggers more primal and carnal imagery with the listener. As her third major release on streaming, we are seeing listeners and attention grow steadily, indicating Indigo is clearly getting noticed. Overall, Rock The Boat is a very enjoyable song, perfect for hot summer nights.
